What Is Psychological Counselling and Who Is It For?

A 2022 survey by iCall-TISS found that 62% of therapy seekers in Indian metros prefer to begin with counselling rather than medication. Counselling is not a lesser form of treatment - for many conditions, it is the primary and most effective treatment. It is also not reserved for people in crisis. Counselling helps people understand themselves, change patterns that are not serving them, process experiences that are stuck, and build the skills to handle what life brings.

At Mansa Clinic, our counselling team works with a wide range of presentations - from a person who feels persistently low without knowing why, to a teenager navigating a difficult family situation, to a couple whose communication has broken down, to a survivor of trauma who has been carrying their experience alone for years. There is no threshold you must meet before counselling is appropriate. If something is bothering you and you want help working through it, that is enough.

Therapy Approaches We Use

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is the most extensively researched psychological therapy in the world and is the recommended first-line treatment for depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and several other conditions. It works by identifying and changing thought patterns and behaviours that maintain distress. At Mansa Clinic, CBT is delivered by Ms. Monali Naidu, Ms. Aditi Dharmadhikari, and Ms. Taiba Patel - all of whom are trained in disorder-specific CBT protocols, not just generic techniques.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT is an evidence-based therapy primarily used for couples and individuals dealing with attachment difficulties, relationship breakdown, and emotional dysregulation. It works by identifying and reshaping the emotional responses and interactional patterns that drive relational distress. Ms. Taiba Patel incorporates EFT into her work with individuals and couples.

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR is a specialised therapy for trauma and PTSD. Endorsed by the WHO, NICE, and the American Psychological Association, it works by using bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer cause distress when recalled. Ms. Taiba Patel is currently completing her EMDRIA certification - making Mansa Clinic one of very few facilities in Aundh offering EMDR-informed trauma therapy.

Art Therapy

Art therapy uses creative expression - drawing, painting, sculpture, and collage - as a vehicle for psychological exploration and healing. It is particularly effective for children and adolescents, trauma survivors, and individuals who struggle to articulate their experience verbally. Ms. Ashima Desai, who holds a Master's in Art Therapy from La Salle College of the Arts, Singapore, brings a trauma-informed, psychodynamic approach to her art therapy sessions.

REBT and Solution-Focused Therapy

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) challenges the irrational beliefs that drive emotional distress, building a more grounded, flexible relationship with oneself and the world. Solution-focused therapy is used effectively for short-term, goal-directed concerns - particularly in clients who want to make practical changes quickly.

Issues Addressed in Counselling

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first counselling session at Mansa Clinic is not an interrogation. Your therapist will introduce themselves, explain how sessions work, and ask open-ended questions about what has brought you in. You are not expected to share everything in the first session. The goal is to begin building the trust that makes meaningful therapeutic work possible.

At the end of the first session, your therapist will share their initial impressions, discuss a proposed approach, and set a provisional plan for subsequent sessions. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, express preferences, and decide whether the approach feels right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication and provide therapy. A counsellor or psychologist focuses on psychotherapy - talk-based and skills-based approaches. Both work together at Mansa Clinic.

Short-term focused work may take 6–12 sessions. Longer-term therapy for complex trauma or personality-related concerns typically runs 6–18 months. Your therapist will give you a realistic estimate after the first session.

Yes. You are welcome to request a specific therapist or specify preferences - for example, a female therapist, a therapist with trauma training, or one with experience in LGBTQ+ concerns.

No. You do not need any artistic skill for art therapy. The process of making is therapeutic in itself - not the quality of what is made.

Please contact the clinic to confirm current availability of online sessions for counselling.

For clients aged 16 and above, sessions are confidential in the same way as adult sessions. For younger adolescents, we discuss confidentiality arrangements with both the young person and their parents in the first session.
